#OpSafeWinter is a global movement launched in November of 2013 to aid the homeless. This winter has been predicted to be one of the most severe in recent history and the homeless population worldwide is also predicted to be one for the records. The global recession, austerity measures, wars, natural disasters and many other factors have converged to make a record number of regular, working people homeless this winter. This coupled with the severe storm season we have already seen beginning in the United States, Europe and the Middle East creates a perfect storm of hopelessness for the homeless this winter. In response to these challenges, a global movement has begun to aid the homeless.
The first mission of this movement is to identify the numbers of homeless citizens in the world. Many cities across the globe have already started this crucial work. Once the communities involved identified just how many people have become homeless, aid began immediately from average people living average lives. By finding out how many of our friends and neighbors have become homeless, we can bring light to how dire this situation actually is and set into motion the aid they so desperately need.
The second part of the movement is to involve local communities, whether through organised charities and regular, everyday, people to aid in directly giving to the homeless. #OpSafeWinter is collecting hats, gloves, warm clothes, blankets. tents, sleeping bags and a whole host of items needed just for survival for many this winter, all across the globe. #OpSafeWinter is using social media to organise by city or community and is bringing friends and neigbors together in the spirit of the giving season to help the homeless survive this brutal winter.
We are reaching out to media outlet across the globe to help friends and neighbors to help the homeless simply by doing a story on the movement. This started as an idea between three people in November and has spread like wildfire across the globe. Currently there are donations & distribution sites in the UK, the United States, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and many other places across Earth. We can provide any and all details required for any journalists ready to help humanity help itself by giving this winter to the homeless.
